2:30 – 4:30 PM	Optional Pre-Conference Workshop on Negotiations	Do you want to be a better negotiator for salary and other benefits? Join us on Thursday, April 4^th at 2:30 PM for the pre-conference workshop on Negotiations for Women in Higher Education. Dr. Cynthia Wang is the Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Research Center (DRCC) and Clinical Professor of Management and Organizations in the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She will lead this interactive and targeted workshop for women in higher education leadership as well as those considering such leadership positions at some point in their careers.
5:00 – 6:30 PM	Networking and hors d’oeuvres	Join us in the Garden Room for a refreshing beverage, a few snacks, and terrific company! Meet other higher education leaders at this networking event.

9:00 – 10:30 AM	Session 1: Keynote - Lifting as we Climb Dr. Angela Franklin, President, Des Moines University	Dr. Angela Franklin, President of Des Moines University, will speak on supporting each other as we seek leadership positions in higher education. Dr. Franklin, who became Des Moines University’s 15^th president in 2011, has worked in higher education for more than 25 years. Previously, she was the executive vice-president and provost at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, where she oversaw academic and administrative departments.
10:30 – 10:45 AM	Break	Coffee/Tea/Juice
10:45 – 12:00 PM	Session 2: Panel Discussion - Different Peaks, Same Mountain?	Not all paths to leadership start in a tenure-track faculty position. Higher education is a diverse landscape with many different roles and opportunities. Panelists from Iowa universities, colleges, and community colleges will share their different paths to higher education leadership positions during this interactive panel discussion.
12:00 – 1:30 PM	Lunch	Networking Opportunity Presentation of the Distinguished Higher Education Leadership Award
1:30 – 3:00 PM	Session 3: Panel Discussion Moving the Needle and Mentoring	As the IOWAWHE prepares to roll out its Mentoring Program in support of the ACE “Moving the Needle” initiative, panelists will discuss how to increase the pool of candidates for executive level positions, the barrier known as imposter syndrome, and gaining necessary experience in the rapidly changing landscape of higher education.

Details About The Conference Theme

Academic leadership is not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not if you are also a woman and an academic leader or a prospective academic leader.

Are you or were you an “up and comer” in your career or institution?
Did someone else notice you or were you the one noticing and lifting other women? Women leaders in academia often face multiple barriers, whether it is oneself, others, or the demographics that contribute to our individual profiles.
There are multiple complexities that may obstruct ones’ professional climb, yet how are we to negotiate them?

In the spirit of ACE’s commitment to Moving the Needle and increasing the number of women in academic leadership positions, the IOWAWHE has chosen “Lifting as We Climb” as the 2019 theme. This theme will embrace the mountain of leadership complexities that women encounter during their climb in academia.

You will gain an understanding of the paths and obstacles women leaders in academia have experienced in order to embrace opportunities when they present themselves or to foster opportunities for others when in positions to do so; and you will leave the conference with the wisdom that ‘we are all in this together.

Event Details:
A pre-conference workshop on Negotiation will take place on Thursday, April 4, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Garden Room, Reiman Gardens on the campus of Iowa State University.

A reception and hors d’oeuvres will follow from 5:00-6:30 p.m.

Conference registration and continental breakfast will begin at 8:00 am on April 5 and the conference will begin at 8:45 in the Garden Room, Reiman Gardens.
